Hermann Nitsch (29.8.1938–18.4.2022) was not just a world famous actionist, painter, philosopher and draftsman: he was also a composer. As early as the 1960s music played a fundamental role in Nitsch’s Gesamtkunstwerk; his compositions are rooted in the scream as a prelingual expression of Dionysian ecstasy. He was also greatly influenced by the work of John Cage, Anton Webern, Richard Wagner and Alexander Skrjabin.

The Tonkünstler Orchestra Lower Austria is now posthumously fulfilling one of the universal genius’ long-held wishes at one of its main residencies by performing Hermann Nitsch’s Ninth Symphony at the Vienna Musikverein!

Under the direction of Patrick Hahn and in collaboration with the Ö1 music expert Albert Hosp, the Tonkünstler will juxtapose Nitsch’s “Ägyptische” with the works of his musical heroes.
